Years ago the leaders of our church established a goal to put good books in the hands of the people. Therefore we opened a bookshop in our church building to offer books of solid substance at as low of a cost as possible. The internet has opened other avenues as well, and there is no lower cost than free!
When you fill out the form below to join our mailing list, we’ll automatically mail you an offer in September for a FREE copy of John’s soon-to-be-released book, Daily Readings from the Life of Christ. No pressure, no obligation—we just want to minister to you.
If you’re already on our mailing list, there’s no need to fill out the form; you’ll automatically receive John’s letter and book offer in your mailbox in September. It’s our gift to you—an expression of our commitment to “Unleashing God’s Truth One Verse at a Time.”
Note: The book will not be available until September. This Free Book Offer page will expire August 20, 2008.

I received a free sample of the ESV study bible over the gospel of Luke today. It looks to be a very helpful new study tool and has wonderful reviews from many evangelical leaders, including, Jerry Bridges, John Piper, Al Mohler, Mark Driscoll, and CJ Mahaney. It appears to be an OT Surveay, NT Survey, and Study Bible all rolled up into one volume. The intro, outline, and charting of key themes before each book are well done. The color maps and diagrams are outstanding. The study notes are helpful. I need to study more, but I do not find them quite as helpful as the New Geneva Study Bible or even MacArthur’s, but they are on par with these study bibles. If you are interested in purchasing one through Edgewood Bookshop please let me know, because it looks as if we will have to pre-order or wait. It retails from $49.99 for hardback, to $239.99 for Calfskin. Bonded leather retails for $74.99 and genuine for $94.99. Early orders should receive discounts ranging between 30-40% off.
If you still use IE it is time to make a change and take back internet browsing! The software will be available at 10 AM PST.

I have the new version now and am loving it! Try it out. My favorite thing about firefox is the search engine bar and the BibleGateway plugin. It makes passage lookup a breeze when you are researching and browsing.

This month’s sponsor is Franklin Springs Family Media. Franklin Springs exists “to provide families with top-quality DVDs that set forth a vision for the fullness of a God-honoring family life.” Their vision “is focused squarely on providing a picture of the exciting reformation that’s happening in families across the country. It’s a world of courageous servant/leader fathers, nurturing mothers who embrace the nobility of raising children, and children who embody the joyous adventure of being raised in a unified family.” If you have read this blog for any length of time you’ll know that I have reviewed most of the existing Franklin Springs titles and have found them well worth owning and well worth viewing.

It was brought to my attention today that a video I had embed had an inappropriate link in it. I was unaware of this and apologize. The problem has now been fixed. Youtube automatically links other “related” videos after a video is played and there is no telling what will be there. If you, like me, enjoy embedding videos from time to time on your blog, here is how you turn off any “related” video links, and it is very simple! This might be helpful to do instead of linking to Youtube and then having the videos on Youtube show these “related” videos at the end on their own site.
How do I turn off the “related videos” feature in the embedded player?
If you’d like to turn off the option to see related videos through your embedded player, simply add “&rel=0″ after the video ID number in the embed code. Here’s an example of what your embed code should look like if you’d like to turn off this feature:
<embed src= "http://www.youtube.com/v/xxxxxx&rel=0” type=”application/x-shockwave-flash”
wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

Bob Kauflin: “From February 1 through February 29, Sovereign Grace will be selling all our CDs for six dollars. With free shipping. In addition, we’ll be selling our Pursuit of Godliness books for five dollars, also with free shipping.” Read his post for more info!

For those at Edgewood, you might want to keep in mind that the style of these CD’s will be more contemporary. We do sing several of the songs from Sovereign Grace including, “I Will Glory in My Redeemer” and the newest one we learned at retreat, “Surrender All”.
If you are new to Sovereign Grace Music, I would recommend considering “Upward“, “Valley of Vision“, and “Worship God Live“. You can listen to samples before buying to see if these CD’s are for you. Remember, the CD’s will not be on sale until February 1st.
I use this blog for multiple purposes, one of which is to put information down that I want record of and can easily find and reference. This post is for that purpose.
Mark Dever’s 5 Points of Criticism
- Directly, not indirectly: Don’t imply the criticism, be direct.

- Seriously, not humorously: If something is worth correcting show respect to others by taking it seriously.
- As if it is important, not casually: Don’t criticize on insignificant things.
- Privately, not publicly: Honor your friend, and don’t create negative views of them in other’s eyes.
- Out of love to them, not to express your feelings or frustrations: “honesty” is sometimes simply frustration. Focus on their need and not your frustration.
- End with Encouragment: This one was added by another after observing how Mark Dever handles situations. Don’t lose the criticism by flattery, slip it in, flattery, but deal directly and then re-enforce your love for the one you are dealing with.
