Quote: Stonewall Jackson in the midst of suffering
The following is an excerpt written in a letter by Stonewall Jackson to his sister following the Sunday when his wife, Ellen, had given birth to their stillborn infant son and died herself of hemorraging.
My dearest Ellie breathed her last on Sunday evening, the same day on which the child was born dead. Oh! the consolations of religion! I can willingly submit to anything if God strengthens me. Oh! my Sister would that you could have Him for your God! Though all nature to me is eclipsed, yet I have joy in knowing that God withholds no good things from them that love and keep his commandments.
I have never experienced anything like what Stonewall Jackson faced on that given Sunday, but I have experienced the strength and love of God and can testify “Amen” to what has been said. If there are any readers who do no know God, then Oh, that you could have Him for your God!

Incredible!
I am currently reading Jackson’s biography by James I. Robertson. It is most captivating. He has always been one of my heroes and this read has bolstered my opinion.
Thank you for sharing this poignant glimpse into this great man’s life. His walk with our Lord is one to be admired and even emulated.

Thanks for posting this Andy, I am a big “fan” of General Jacksons! In fact he is one historical figure that my sons will learn much of over the course of their education.
I knew Jacksons name from history but never knew any of the details of his life. I bought the movie “Gods and Generals” a while back and it goes into a little more detail about him. It was a very inspiring movie and prompted me to check out a book specifically about Jackson. I would highly recommend reading about his life and faith, it is a very inspiring story, especially considering the trials he faced throughout his lifetime. I am on my way to the library today and will look for the biography mentioned above (thanks for the recommendation Scott).

Andy,
That was a wonderful example from Jackson that you gave. made me come home after service and pull down a book called ALL THINGS FOR GOOD by J. Stevens Wilkins on the life of Jackson it is rich with just those types of things you mentioned in your sermon. Also have this week been watching God’s and Generals as well.
Hope your having a good week.
