Glued to the Sermon
Posted in Our Family, Quotes by ministerandy on July 16th, 2007
This summer we have focused on helping the teens and children in our church listen to
the sermons and take notes. We have provided outlines and a place for children to draw pictures about what they hear and answer a simple application question. Today Kara was telling me about her sermon notes from last night’s sermon. She said, “At the end of the sermon, I was glued to the sermon. You know how when I watch TV I am glued to the TV, well I was glued to the end of the sermon. Seriously.”

i really like the idea of having a place for kids to draw… it’s a nice recognition that not everyone thinks in words, lists, and outlines.

Andy,
I appreciate the focus on notes for the youth. My wife and 2 daughters have always been diligent about taking notes in church, but Drew really hasn’t. He has been doing a good job taking them now and hopefully this will be something that will carry over in the future.
I also appreciate your understanding for the younger ones. I know when our kids were little, I always felt that if they couldn’t keep strict notes and delineate the 5 points in every sermon, they weren’t trying hard enough. I think there is a difference in just “drawing” vs. drawing something based on the sermon. It has always been encouraged when their “notes” were posted at times in the bulletin, but this series focuses on it even more. I was never quite that harsh in my requirements as stated above, but I’m sure there were times that I could have better realized they were still young………………….I guess that’s why God gave me my wife.

David,
I love seeing the kids pictures and how they relate to the sermon. We want our children to know that church and sermons are for them too. This means even the times when we are all together for worship. I hope this helps them to understand this. They have been doing great.
And you are right, some are more visual than conceptual so pictures help.
Mark,
Thanks for the comment. The teens have been doing a great job with the notes. From my perspective it is great to have them following along for the whole sermon.
And I agree with you on the wife part. I think you married pretty well. It is amazing how God works it so our wives balance us out on so many issues.
