The Day the Church Stopped Believing In God

Posted in Uncategorized  by Pastor Andy on November 3rd, 2004

John 17:3 “And this is eternal life, that they may know you the only true God.”

How can the Church stop believing in God? Every church is centered on God. It would be better stated that every church is centered on a god. If you believe the logic for the reasoning for God that says God is the being of which no higher being can be thought, then there is only room for one God in the universe. Therefore, God must then be higher than any of our thoughts and thus the only way to know him is to believe what He has revealed about Himself to mankind. In churches all over, they have stopped believing in this Being. It is common to hear someone say, I cannot believe in a God who would send people to Hell. I cannot believe in a God who would not allow women to preach. I refuse to believe in a God that says homosexuality is wrong. I do not want to believe in a God that would choose to save one person and not the next. And all over, without verbalizing it, many have made the claim that they cannot believe in a God that does not let His will be dictated by men’s will. I would challenge you to study the Bible and see what God says about all of these things (Romans 9:22-23, Romans 9:13-18, 1 Corinthians 6:9, 1 Timothy 2:12). This does not exhaust the list, but are some of the ways in which we reconstruct God. We try to make him fit our mind, our logic, and our desires. However, the end result is that we stop believing in the one true God, and start worshipping a god constructed in our own mind. What are you basing your eternal life on, the only true God, or a god of you mind?

    Hello,

I appreciate what you have to say here, regarding that we cannot reason God from a human perspective. The problem is, God is inconsistent. There was absolutely no way for Jesus’ disciples to fulfill the Matthew 28:19 commandment. This is because ancient man had absolutely NO knowledge of the Western Hemisphere.

Such ignorance proves that Christianity is false. How can the son of God issue an impossible command? What about all of those souls who waited 1500 years…until Columbus…for the the “truth”?

I appreciate a sincere reply without telling me that I cannot question God. I seek to understand how we are supposed to fulfill Jesus’ commandment within the context of history before Columbus.

    Cameron,

Understanding that Christianity is a religion that is by grace through faith. I realize that pure reason alone is not enough. However, Christianity does not have to conflict with our reason. I believe that there is an element of Faith in any worldview or belief system. The object of our faith is often far different. Some lean on their own understanding or have faith in their own wisdom (one only has to begin to count how many times we are wrong to see this is a risky faith), others place their faith in Science (again one needs to realize how many theories have been proven wrong with time and further study), others in God and his Word (this goes against human nature and wisdom, scripture even tells us this much). As for Matthew 28:19, I do not think this is the best argument for one to use, but will answer it. From man’s point of view, you are right, there is no way the disciples could have know what this entailed. However, from an infinite all-knowing God’s perspective He surely knew, because he made the world and everything in it. He also knew the exact time of Christ’s return and that these disciples would make other disciples who would then in turn make other disciples. This would continue and still continues, until all of God’s people are brought to salvation. So, God was not simply instructing his disciples for that generation, but also for future generations. They carried out there end (look at the back of a bible to see all the extent of the missionary journeys the apostles made), but the fulfillment of that is still taking place. God’s word is timeless. It goes beyond the science of the day and one generation. God was not wrong because the disciples did not know what would be discovered 1400 years later. What other questions does this raise for you?
